EV charger installation in El Cajon

A Level 2 charger adds roughly 20 to 40 miles of range an hour, depending on the car and the charger. That’s enough to fill most EVs overnight. We run the 240-volt circuit, mount the charger you picked, and make sure your panel can carry it.

When to call

  • You just bought or leased an EV or plug-in hybrid
  • A regular outlet can’t keep up with your commute
  • You want the charger outside, in a carport or by the driveway
  • A second EV is coming and both need to charge
  • Your business wants chargers for staff or customers
  • You have solar and want to charge from it

Level 1 or Level 2

Level 1 is the regular 120-volt outlet, about 3 to 5 miles of range an hour. Fine for a short commute or a plug-in hybrid.

Level 2 runs on 240 volts, like a dryer, and is what most people install at home.

Hardwired or plug-in

A NEMA 14-50 outlet lets you plug in a portable charger and take it with you. A hardwired wall charger can charge faster, and anything set above 40 amps has to be hardwired. Either way, the circuit is sized at 125% of what the charger draws, because the code treats EV charging as a continuous load.

What about my panel?

Most 200 amp panels have room for one charger. Older 100 and 125 amp panels often don’t, at least not at full speed.

Before you pay for a panel upgrade, ask about load management. An energy management system (EVEMS) watches the house’s total load and slows the charger while the AC and dryer are running, so the charger fits on the panel you have. Several chargers have this built in.

Chargers we install

Any listed Level 2 charger: Tesla Wall Connector, ChargePoint, Emporia, Grizzl-E and others. If you haven’t bought one yet, we’ll tell you what amperage your panel can support before you do.

Charging with solar

Under California’s current solar billing rules (the Net Billing Tariff), power you use yourself is worth more than power you send to the grid. Charging while the sun is up makes the most of your panels, and we can plan the charger and the solar together.

Will a charger fit on your panel?

Pick your panel size and what you’re adding. Send us the result and we’ll confirm it.

Can my panel handle it?

A quick read on whether your panel has room for what you’re adding.

Does it say any of these?
What are you adding?

A rough guide from typical loads, not a load calculation. The real answer needs your panel, your house and a licensed electrician.

Questions about ev charger installation

Do I need a permit for an EV charger?

Yes. A new 240-volt circuit for an EV charger needs an electrical permit in El Cajon and across the county. We handle it.

How long does the install take?

Most single-charger installs at a home take a day. A long run from the panel, trenching to a detached garage, or a panel upgrade adds time.

Can I install two chargers?

Yes. Many chargers can share one circuit and split the power between two cars, which can avoid a bigger panel.

Do you install chargers for businesses?

Yes. Tell us how many cars and where they park, and we’ll look at the electrical service.
